Bookshelf Closet Makeover with The Home Depot

I attended HAVEN conference for DIYers and home décor bloggers for the first time in July, and not only did I walk away with a great overall experience (my first virtual conference during the pandemic!), but #Miniboss and I also won our category in The Home Depot’s Orange Tank pitch competition!

We pitched an idea to build “Industrial Chic Closet Bookshelves” in the only space in our Mommy & Me office that we haven’t styled. Our closet is not only the place where we keep our ever-growing collection of books, over the years, it’s become the catch-all space where we throw everything that doesn’t have a home. Now that we are both working and learning from home, we decided that it was time to give our closet a long overdue makeover.

Here’s our winning video submission…

The idea to do an industrial chic look came from my love of NYC and my on-going quest to create spaces in our home (“Grant Central”) that remind of my years in the City. We used reclaimed brick peel and stick wallpaper to create the stunning backdrop and poplar boards supported by decorative plumbing pipes to create the shelves.

Although we ordered most of the products on-line via in-store pick-up and home shipping, we did go into the store to pick up the lumber. Here’s a photo of the helpful Home Depot associate who cut the boards for us.

And this is me sanding the wood once we got home…

Installing the wallpaper is definitely a two-person job, so I enlisted my niece, Brooke, to help me. She’s an engineering student with a great eye for detail that was super helpful when it came to lining up the bricks. See the full DIY tutorial with all steps on The Home Depot blog here.

When it was time to hang the shelves, I asked my Uncle Eric to help. We both learned our DIY skills from my grandfather, who was a bricklayer. I know he would be so proud to see us working on this project together! See the full DIY tutorial with all steps on The Home Dept blog here .

And last, but not least, I enlisted the help of Riley when it came to styling the shelves. There are so many pieces on here that I love, but two of my favorites are the brass-finished bicycle bookends (because Riley learned how to ride a bike during the pandemic!) and the distressed gold jacks (because they remind me of my childhood!). Both of these pieces are available at HomeDepot.com.

I’m so pleased with how our industrial chic closet bookshelves turned out! Each time I open the closet, I feel like I’m in a gorgeous New York loft. Best of all, Riley and I are so much more organized and can say that we truly love our entire space—no more running to close the closet when we have visitors!

Thank you again, Home Depot, for helping us bring this project to life! See the full DIY tutorial with all materials and steps on The Home Depot blog here.
